We aim to provide advanced training that enables MPhil and PhD students to build up their theoretical and applied knowledge of one or more of the areas related to English Studies
– literature, cultural studies, linguistics, translation
– and acquire the skills and abilities necessary to conduct critical and original research in their field of specialisation.

Research areas of the Department:
- Literature: works from the Renaissance to the contemporary period in genres such as poetry, drama and the novel including science fiction, children’s literature and the literature of travel.
- Cultural Studies: film/media history and theory, literature and film, environmental humanities, gender and feminism;
- Linguistics: Cognitive linguistics, second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, pragmatics and discourse analysis, comparative grammar studies, and EAP;
- Translation: corpus-based translation studies, empirical studies of translation, gender-based translation studies, and translation teaching.

We place a special emphasis on interdisciplinary studies and we welcome theses that explore the intersections of areas.
